Priyanka Chopra has been absent from Bollywood for a long time. While audiences have been waiting for her big screen return, she has recently revealed the reasons why she decided to leave the Hindi film industry.
Chopra said that Bollywood’s obsession with fair skin was one of the reasons she left the industry and she eventually went to try her luck in Hollywood around eight years ago.
Chopra has previously denied to reveal anything about her reason to leave Bollywood but she recently appeared on the podcast Armchair Expert where she spoke of the politics and cliques she became a victim of.
Priyanka Chopra said that actors like her who were classified as dusky were treated differently and that she was lightened up in most of her movies.
Chopra recalled about shooting for a song called Chitti Dudh Kudi which means a girl as white as milk and that she had to be lightened up in the movie.
Chopra added that female actors had a better chance of being chosen and of doing well while even a star like her was a victim of discrimination.
Priyanka has also regretted her appearance in an ad for a fairness cream early in her career where she played a dark-skinned flower seller having a crush on a young man and when she applies the cream, the man shows interest in her.
Chopra continued by saying that such ads were damaging the self-esteem of Indians with dark skin and that she agreed to it because big beauty brands offered visibility and income for female stars.
