The ending of ‘Inception’ has always been a puzzle that remained unsolved for the audience. But it is still one of the best works by Christopher Nolan.
Towards the end of the film, the heist was a success and Cobb is reunited with his children. He spins the top for one last time and the screen fades to black.
There were questions on if Cobb managed to meet his family or if he was trapped in limbo. Only Nolan could have explained this in a better way.
While speaking to Esquire magazine, Michael Caine said that when he received Inception’s script, he was puzzled. He told Chris that he has no idea about the differences between dreams and reality.
Because Caine was featured in the end, it means that it was not a dream. Nolan later explained the ending while speaking at New Jersey-based Princeton University.
Nolan stated that people began to see reality as the poor cousin to dreams and that dreams and virtual realities are subsets of reality.
Nolan clarified that Cobb was in his own subjective reality and because he did not care anymore, all levels of reality are valid.
Nolan ended by saying that he saw the audience's reaction and their question of whether everything is a dream or reality is a question he has been asked every time. He said that it matters because that’s the point of reality.
