Some fans believe that whilst Goku is an exemplary fighter, he is not the best father to Gohan and Goten.
Before contemplating the answer to this question, one needs to keep in mind that Goku is not a human. He is a Saiyan, which means his emotions are a little different than that of a human.
The one thing that some fans always bring up to prove that Goku is a bad father and doesn't care for his sons, is that he gave Cell a Senzu bean before he fought Gohan.
In Goku's defense he never forced any of his children to do something against their will. Even in the Saiyan saga, it was Piccolo who forced Gohan.
In addition to that, he never forced Goten to train either. Chi-Chi, on the other hand, shut Goten down whenever he tried to train and asked him to become a scholar.
Goku was most definitely not around either of his sons, either by his own choice or due to unfortunate circumstances.
That doesn't mean that he doesn't care for his sons. Goku loves his sons very much and tries to protect them to the best of his capabilities.
Thus, whilst Goku is nowhere near the best father in the anime world, he is most definitely not bad.
