Oscar winner Louise Fletcher dies at 88

Fletcher was an American actress mostly known for playing the cruel nurse Ratched in 'One Flew Over Cuckoo's Nest'.  She was in her 40s and little known in the showbiz when she bagged the role.

The role earned her international recognition and  an Academy Award for Best Actress, a BAFTA Award, and a Golden Globe Award.  The film also took home Oscars for Best Picture, Actor in Lead Role, Actress in Lead Role, Director, and Screenplay.

In a 2004 interview, the actress talked about how she got the role. "“I was the last person cast. It wasn’t until we were halfway through shooting that I realized the part had been offered to other actresses who didn’t want to appear so horrible on the screen.”

 Fletcher  was known for her recurring role as the Bajoran religious leader Kai Winn Adami in the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Her final role was as Rosie in the Netflix series Girlboss

Fletcher died in her sleep surrounded by family at her home in Montdurausse, France, her agent David Shaul told The Associated Press on Friday. No cause was given.
