The annual Met Gala evening was off to a great start in New York. The Super Bowl of Fashion was star-studded and breathed Gilded Age. The theme was “In America: An Anthology Of Fashion.” After a lull last year, the ball is back with a fashion storm. Musicians, celebrities, actors, politicians, and sports personalities brought their take on the Gilded era of New York.
The aim was to channel the 1870-1890 era with a twist to Gilded Glamor and white tie attire. As per Vogue, the attendees must “embody the grandeur and perhaps, the dichotomy of Gilded Age New York.”
Anna Wintour, Tour De Force of Vogue along with Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Regina King, and Lin-Manuel Miranda hosted the evening of the Gala. Let’s take a virtual tour of some of the highlights of the carpet.
Musicians Were The Stars Of The Evening
The Met Gala had a lack of pomp and grandeur which was served by Lady Gaga and Billy Porter in 2019. They did not have an appearance, but rather a performance. That opulence was brought back by Lizzo.
She appeared on the carpet with one of the best props: a flute. The artist appeared in a Thom Browne Gown which took 22,000 hours. The gown was a black, silk satin dress with embroidery done manually.
Another artist who shone brighter in a Versace Lilac Mesh dress with butterflies on her head was the Grammy winner Olivia Rodrigo. She told the compère, Vanessa Hudgens, “We were inspired by the opulence of the Gilded Age.
The Anaconda rapper made a comeback after a year’s hiatus at the Met Gala Red Carpet 2022. Nicki Minaj wore a Burberry, bejeweled busty gown with leather leggings and a baseball cap. Her face was bejeweled, too. Richard designed the outfit for the rap star.
There was an influx of great youthful energy that brought some period fashion to the carpet. One of them is the Oscar-winning musician, Billie Eilish. For this year’s theme, Billie adorned a green corrected gown complete with a bustle, lace sleeves, and floral details. Apparently, the Gucci gown was upcycled.
Some Couple Goals With Impactful Appearances On The Red Carpet
The fashionable night is incomplete with the power couples’ appearances on the Red Carpet at Met Gala. This year was no different. We saw some new couples, some experienced ones on the carpet. One of them was the co-chairs Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds.
Continuing with the tradition, Blake Lively had a silhouette similar to that of the carpet. The actress donned a Versace gown, a strapless Atelier accessorized with a crown and pink opera gloves. Ryan Reynolds sticking to the white tie theme had a black tuxedo and a white bow tie.
Making their Met Ball debut, Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson made the last, but impactful entry on the Red Carpet. Kardashian wore an iconic Marilyn Monroe dress that she wore while singing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President,” during John F. Kennedy’s administration. Pete was wearing the three-piece suit complementing his beau Kim Kardashian.
Another musical power couple was the Empire State Of Mind singer Alicia Keys with Swizz Beatz. Alicia paid homage to New York in a Ralph Lauren and jewels from Tiffany & Co. The rapper wore a Varsity Jacket-inspired suit with Tiffany & Co. Jewelry.
Celebrities Used The Met Gala Platform To Pay Homages
Certain celebrities use any given platform to make political statements and pay respect to the people or episodes from the pages of history.
The actor and producer, Riz Ahmed had an outfit that didn’t exactly complement the glamor, glitz that Met Ball was. Riz arrived in a silk shirt and undershirt accessorized with a Cartier Necklace. He said, “This is an homage to the immigrant workers who kept the Gilded Age going.”
Making an appearance after two decades, Senate person Hillary Clinton adorned an outfit with a message. She sported a simple, red gown with famous American women’s names embroidered on it. Joseph Altuzarra designed the satin, off-shoulder floor-length gown. She paid tribute to great American women namely Rosa Parks, Abigail Adams, Harriet Tubman, Lady Bird, and many others.
