1986 blockbuster ‘Top Gun’ starred Tom Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell – a rookie pilot who attends the United States Navy’s elite fighter weapons school. Maverick then goes head-to-head with Iceman, played by Val Kilmer as they compete to become the “top gun” or the best pilot in their batch. The movie also starred Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, and Meg Ryan.

The 1986 action drama was directed by Tony Scott, and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, in association with Paramount Pictures. The story was inspired by an article titled ‘Top Guns’ published in California magazine three years prior to the film’s release.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ recorded a tremendous opening over Memorial Day weekend and its billion-dollar box office number is highly impressive. It is the first Tom Cruise movie to achieve the milestone in his more than four-decade-long career. While it took him more than 30 years to return with ‘Top Gun’ sequel, it was all totally worth the wait.
The official synopsis of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ reads, “Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears. Culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.”
About the film’s unprecedented success, Paramount Pictures’ president and CEO Brian Robbins said in a statement, “It’s rare to get the special kind of alchemy that creates a true event film, and we have been absolutely blown away by the global response.”
