Matt Smith has received unanimous praise for his portrayal of the greedy prince Daemon Targaryen in ‘House of the Dragon‘. But the actor was initially reluctant to do the show knowing the baggage of ‘Game of Thrones.’

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Matt said he didn’t want to do the HBO show. “And I was like, “Ohhh. I don’t know. It’s a tough one, isn’t it? It’s a tough one to follow. Haven’t we seen this before?” But then [the offer] sort of didn’t go away. Then it came up again, and then I went in for a screen test, and then that was that.”

The British actor also expressed that it might not be able to eclipse the success of its parent show. He said that “it will be impossible to replicate or re-create that time.”

He continued, “It’s never gonna re-create the levels of success that Thrones had because it can’t — it was a totally original moment. But we’ve tried to create something that feels entertaining in a similar way, but will hopefully take on a different identity.”

Game of Thrones‘ was known for its heavy reliance on sex scenes and gory violence. Its prequelHouse of the Dragon‘ is no different as it was clear with the first episode.

Matt talked about it in a recent interview. “You do find yourself asking, ‘Do we need another sex scene?‘” The 39-year-old actor said. “And they’re like, ‘Yeah, we do.’ I guess you have to ask yourself: ‘What are you doing? Are you representing the books, or are you diluting the books to represent the time [we’re living in]?

The Crown‘ actor continued, “And I actually think it’s your job to represent the books truthfully and honestly, as they were written.”

He was asked whether his character has several steamy scenes in the show. The ‘Doctor Who‘ actor answered, “Yeah — slightly too much, if you ask me.”
