Smith warned Chris Rock to “keep my wife’s name out of your f*cking lips” after the smack.

Many comedians defended Rock, claiming that Smith really shouldn’t have treated the gag so literally and that assaulting him was entirely inappropriate. “I’m still disgusted,” Gaffigan added on Twitter. We don’t deserve @chrisrock’s genius. ‘When you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything,’ – Donald Trump and Will Smith.”

One guy tweeted, “Wow what a courageous and dumb comparison.” “A guy getting smacked for making light of a woman’s autoimmune illness is not sexual assault,” one person said. Gaffigan swiftly took the tweet down and explained his remarks.

He tweeted, “Okay, terrible analogy on my part.” “I was attempting to make a point, but it’s irrelevant.” “I didn’t guess the irony was really clever. Chris Rock, as I have stated, is a genius. I still believe it, and that we do not deserve his talent. Please continue to protect people who have been physically assaulted. It speaks a lot.”

While many people were offended by Gaffigan’s analogy, others agreed with the attitude he was attempting to communicate. One individual answered, “I’m with you, Jim.” “Assault has no place in our society.”

“I’m honestly afraid for comedy’s future if anyone in the crowd is permitted to walk up and attack a performer over their perceived insolence,” another person remarked “This establishes a very hazardous precedent [sic] for the future.”

Gaffigan isn’t the first comic to back Rock in the aftermath of the event. “Let me tell you something, it’s a very poor practice to come upon the stage and physically attack a Comedian,” Kathy Griffin, who has also received a lot of anger, tweeted, “Now we all have to be concerned about who the next Will Smith will be in comedy shows and theatres.”
