Joe Russo, Director Of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Reveals His Favorite Movie In MCU Phase IV So Far

Phase IV of the Marvel Cinematic Universe began last year with Black Widow starring Scarlett Johansson. The phase has so far given some money-spinners as well as some schematically well-designed films. Be it the Chloe Zoe-helmed “Eternals” or the recent “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness”. We feel Phase III could not have asked for a better ending initiating the Infinity Saga. The phase ended with “Avengers: Endgame” directed by Anthony and Joe Russo.

The film brought a dreamy ensemble as well as amalgamated 22 previous stories. It was a commercially viable film, which broke records by making $1 billion in its opening weekend. Though the phase ended, Joe Russo is keeping himself updated with the new phase and has a favorite film from Phase IV already.

During a podcast, Joe Russo, the director of “Avengers: Endgame” revealed that Tom Holland-starrer Spider-Man: No Way Home is his favorite Phase IV film. Russo was happy with no direct involvement with the film. Citing the reason, he said, “I thought No Way Home was unbelievable. It was fantastic. I thought it was pitch-perfect.” The Pandemic affected the theatrical releases of films worldwide. The studios switched to OTT platforms, but he watched No Way Home in theatre. He continued, “It was one of the best times I’ve had in the movie theater in a long time, and it was nice not being involved.

The director further continued, “As a film geek, I could just go sit in a theater and be surprised and laugh and cry with everyone else in the movie theater.” Joe praised Marvel’s ability to bring a throng of cine-goers back to the theaters after the pandemic hiatus. While praising, he said, “I think the one thing that Marvel doesn’t get enough credit for is what else bonded people after such a divisive time during the pandemic and after all this manufactured conflict that’s been playing out in America over the last four years? But going into a theater, race, color, creed, whether you’re a Democrat or Republican, it doesn’t matter.”

No wonder why Russo went all gung-ho about the new Spider-Man film. The film brought all the Spider-Men together along with the past villains and introduced the parallel universe phenomenon of Multiverse to the audience. He lauded the efforts of Marvel for giving the worldwide audience a communal experience. Russo said, “The power of filmmaking is its ability to bind people together as a community in a public space, irrespective of background. And Marvel does that better than anyone, and I don’t think they get enough credit for that.”

He continued “And if that is the true power of what filmmaking is, then they’re certainly the most potent filmmaking entity on the planet because you go into one of those theaters, and, boy, there’s a lot of joy and happiness, and emotion, and excitement going on in one of their films. And you just see that in any other movie. Even, historically, I’m not sure that you’ve seen that level of excitement on any film other than when Marvel’s operating at the top of their game.”
