There have been a lot of performers that have had a run-in with the MCU, but never ended up landing a role. DeWanda Wise, who debuted in ‘Jurassic World Dominion‘, is among the newcomers on this list. But owing to schedule issues, the ‘She’s Gotta Have It‘ actress was replaced by Lashana Lynch to play Carol Danver’s bestie, Maria Rambeau. Wise reflects on the experience of handing up the post years later.
Earlier this year, DeWanda Wise left the Captain Marvel ensemble owing to scheduling difficulties with Spike Lee’s Netflix series ‘She’s Gotta Have It’. Wise told Gizmodo the following when questioned about his plans to leave the role:
“I always correct people, I did not choose to leave. I would never make that choice for myself, that sounds ridiculous. You sign a contract for a TV show and it’s in the first position, and that’s just a responsible… you have audience members who are like, ‘I would’ve taken a lawsuit.’ Good for you. I don’t wanna be sued! Not trying to be sued by Spike Lee and Netflix. So, you know, at the time it was very disappointing, and also difficult in that context. A lot of actors, we see what you say. Like, we see when you’re being like, ‘Oh, you’re so stupid’ or whatever it is.”
DeWanda Wise On Her Probable Role As Maria Rambeau In Captain Marvel
For contractual reasons, DeWanda Wise was unable to complete the role of Maria Rambeau opposite Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel.
She went on to say: “And it’s a real practice to not get defensive when people are speaking about you like that online. But with this, obviously, clearly, if it’s not clear by now, Maria was a pilot, and to your point, what you just said earlier, I don’t repeat performances. So if I had played in Captain Marvel, if I’d already played a pilot, and then Colin called me for this and he’s like ‘Guess what? She’s a pilot, I would’ve been like ‘I’m so sorry, I don’t believe in capitalism. You’re gonna have to find someone else.’ Do you know? So, I just think everything happens in the time that it’s meant to happen and I’m very thankful to be here now.”
However, Wise’s career came in a complete circle with ‘Jurassic World Dominion‘ because she’ll be portraying a pilot in the 2022 film. Her response to the question of whether she’d reprise her role as Maria if the topic came up in a conversation about Dominion was revealing. In the end, it all worked out just as planned.
