Kevin Smith Lashes Out At Warner Bros. For Shelving ‘Batgirl’ But Releasing ‘The Flash’

Kevin Smith is one of the most eccentric filmmakers of his generation. Starting out with a no-budget independent film, Kevin has now made a name for himself in Hollywood. He is also vocal about the industry practices.

The 52-year-old filmmaker has now joined the list of celebrities to slam Warner Bros. for shelving ‘Batgirl‘ after it finished shooting. He criticized the studio for shelving the film but planning to release ‘The Flash.’ Kevin said that it won’t look for the studio to shelve a female-driven superhero film starring a Latino actress.

The director of ‘Clerks’ recently appeared on the latest episode of his “Hollywood Babble-On” YouTube show. He slammed Warner Bros. for shelving ‘Batgirl‘ and still moving ahead with ‘The Flash.’

He said, “It’s an incredibly bad look to cancel the Latina ‘Batgirl’ movie.” Kevin continued, “I don’t give a shit if the movie was absolute fucking dog shit – I guarantee you that it wasn’t.”

He then praised the directors of the film. “The two directors [Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi] who directed that movie did a couple of episodes of ‘Ms. Marvel,’ and it was a wonderful fucking show and they had more money to do ‘Batgirl’ than they had to do an episode of ‘Ms. Marvel’ and stuff.”

Earlier, Marvel Studio chief Kevin Feige and director Edgar Wright came out in the director’s support and sent them mails.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Warner Bros. will not be releasingBatgirl’, the DC film that already finished shooting. The film, starring Leslie Grace, was supposed to arrive on HBO Max sometime this year.

This weird and unexpected move came after a leadership change in the studio; Warner Bros. Discovery has a new CEO David Zaslav. He is prioritizing cost-cutting measures and focusing on making theatrical films rather than projects for streaming services.

Batgirl was given a budget of nearly $80 million. But the cost increased to nearly $90 million due to COVID-19 protocols. The amount is significantly lower than other DC superhero films.

The move has received widespread criticism from fans and people from the industry. It also led DC Films president Walter Hamada to near exit the studio. But he has now agreed to stay at least until the release of Black Adam.
