Cage explained why he turned down parts in movies such as the Lord of the Rings and The Matrix in a new interview with People. While Cage in Massive Talent is seeking the next film to kickstart his movie career, the real Cage prioritizes his family. There is no version of Cage who “didn’t put family first above profession,” according to him. The fact that The Lord of the Rings would have taken Cage away from his family for three years in New Zealand, and The Matrix would have done the same in Australia, was not worth the experience of participating in these films for Cage.

“First and foremost … there’s no version of Nic Cage in reality that doesn’t want to spend time with his children. There’s no version of Nic Cage that didn’t put family first over career. I turned down Lord of the Rings and I turned down Matrix because I didn’t want to go to New Zealand for three years or Australia for three years because I needed to be home with my son Weston, that’s a fact,” added Cage.

Cage’s motives for refusing to join such lucrative franchises are admirable. Weston Cage, Cage’s son, would have been nine years old when The Lord of the Rings began production. This would undoubtedly be a difficult age for a child to be separated from their parent for three years, and Cage was right to be concerned. In the end, it was the right option, because Cage is fortunate to have a strong connection with his family, and his profession did not suffer. Nevertheless, one can’t help but wonder who Cage would have portrayed in these films and how well he would have performed.

Nicolas has more than once said that his role in his upcoming movie has been a challenge for him. Nicolas is happy with the choices of films he has done and will do.
