The fact that Taylor Swift has fans all over the world and across all fields isn’t an exaggeration. And making that fact more relevant, a Virginia Tech scientist has named a newly discovered species after the artist. The researchers who discovered 17 new species of millipedes named one of them after the acclaimed artist.
Nannaria Swiftae- A New Millipede Species Named After Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift now has a millipede species named after her. Out of the 17 species of millipede discovered in the Appalachian Mountains, the researchers named one after the artist. Virginia scientists Derek Hennen, Jackson Means, and Paul Marek described their discovery in a new paper published in Zookeys. Hennen, the lead author, in turn, revealed the name Nannaria Swiftae for a specific millipede species.
“The specific name is a noun in the genitive case derived as a matronym and is named in honor of the artist Taylor Swift, in recognition of her talent as a songwriter and performer and in appreciation of the enjoyment her music has brought DAH,” the paper reads.
“Her music helped me get through the highs and lows of graduate school, so naming a new millipede species after her is my way of saying thanks,” Hennen said.
According to Dennen, he named this particular species after Swift because of its availability in only Tennessee so far. Moreover, Dennen noted that millipedes play an important role in decomposition, however, are particularly hard to find because they rarely surface over the soil.
Furthermore, he revealed that the team tracked this group after a lengthy research of over 5 years. Dennen and his team covered 17 different states in the quest to find the twisted-claw millipedes. Moreover, Derek Hennen also named one of the other species Nannaria Marianae after his wife.
