Hollywood’s much-anticipated next iteration of Superman is officially in the works under the title ‘Superman: Legacy’ now changed to just ‘Superman’, with director James Gunn leading the charge. The film is set to release in July 2025, with stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, as per a recent announcement by the director himself.

Gunn made the exciting announcement on social media, as he also revealed a first look at Superman’s suit and shared details about the film’s development.

Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday,” Gunn wrote in a statement posted to social media along with a picture of the Superman logo and suit.

When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025,” he added.

The unveiled Superman logo showcased in Gunn’s announcement differed slightly from fans’ expectations, as it leaned more towards the traditional Superman insignia rather than the Kingdom Come arc design.

The upcoming film would focus on a younger Kal-El navigating through the complexities of his Kryptonian heritage alongside his human existence as Clark Kent in Smallville, Kansas.

Along with David Corenswet as the new face of Superman, the ensemble cast also includes Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern (Guy Gardner), Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl.

The cast recently shared a group photo following a table read, with Nicholas Hoult donning a bald head, indicating his Lex Luthor’s iconic appearance. As ‘Superman: Legacy’ now officially has a name, fans can rejoice over the fresh narrative their iconic superhero of the DC universe will bring to them with a theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
