To all The DCEU fans that are eagerly waiting for the Release Of the next DC projects, there is bad news. Recently Black Adam was postponed due to reasons unknown, and now Aquaman 2 and The Flash releases have been pushed back. On the other hand, there is good news too, as Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be released earlier.
Movies That Are Postponed And New Release Dates
Aquaman 2 and the already delayed Flash movie are both put back to 2023, according to Variety. Just days before the news Dwayne Johnson had revealed the delay of Black Adam. The release date for Aquaman 2 has been pushed back from December 16, 2022, to March 17, 2023. While the release date for Ezra Miller’s solo feature, Flash, has been pushed back from November 4, 2022, to June 23, 2023. Shazam! Fury of the Gods has been pushed up from its initial June 2, 2023 release date to December 12, 2022. It is a welcome relief for DCEU fans.
In addition to the DCEU reshuffle, Warner Bros. has postponed Timothée Chalamet’s Wonka to December 15, 2023. Also The Meg 2: The Trench to August 4, 2023.
While both Marvel and DC films have had several delays, the DCEU seems to have a difficult time. The Flash, in particular, has previously been delayed many times, with writers and filmmakers changing along the way before ultimately hitting theatres.
What Is Wrong With The Flash?
The animated film The LEGO Movie was developed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. They were roped in to develop the storyline of The Flash in 2015. Meanwhile, Seth Grahame-Smith from The LEGO Batman Movie was asked to write and direct the standalone picture. Rick Famuyiwa took over as director when Grahame-Smith left the film in 2016. After Famuyiwa left, Warner Bros. engaged Joby Harold (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) to change the script, which he did in 2018. The film’s writers, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Spider-Man: Homecoming), were chosen to direct, but Andy Muschietti (It) took their place, and production ultimately began, with Bumblebee and Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson managing the final screenplay.
Production for The Flash started in April 2021 and ended in October 2021, according to Kiersey Clemons, who plays Iris West. “It’s been a long time,” Clemons said. “I came on board the film delighted to work with the filmmaker at the moment, as well as to be a part of a superhero film. It’s no longer about the film. I’m delighted for Andy [Muscietti], who is now our director, but now it’s more about the people who are enthusiastic, and who were commenting on my images ‘Iris West’ for the past five years. Are you kidding me? This is intended for them.”
The Reason For Delays
While no reason was offered for the delays, it’s probable that the films may require more post-production work. The screenplays themselves may be undergoing rewrites, which is a standard process in Hollywood blockbusters. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be released on March 17, 2023, followed by The Flash on June 23, 2023.
