‘Home Alone 2’: Joe Pesci Reveals A Fire Hat Prank That Went Burningly Wrong

Joe Pesci who starred as the hot-headed thief Harry in two ‘Home Alone’ movies opens about a fire hat prank that went horribly wrong. I probably speak for all the 90s kids and 2k kids out there, when I say, ‘Home Alone’ is one of the most treasured memories of our childhood. It probably still is a very fond memory even in our adulthood.

We might have all had a mini heart attack when we saw that ‘Home Alone’ kid all grown up. A mini Titanic violin sad song might have played in our mind when we found out we all grew into an adult. To all the adults whose inner child is bubbling to come out, please re-watch ‘Home Alone’ alone to re-kindle the childhood epiphanies.

The Fire Hat Prank That Went Horribly Wrong

    Joe Pesci and Stern

The 79-year-old Pesci, in an email interview with PEOPLE for the ‘Home Alone’ franchise’s 30th anniversary revealed some exciting BTS (not the band, people, althought I would very much love BTS to be in a movie). He said that retaining the original cast and crew from 1990’s ‘Home Alone‘ for the second installment gave the entire production “the same, if not more, energy and enthusiasm as the original.”

Pesci looked back at the “demanding” physical comedy that was required for the film. One prank in the second movie scene in which Harry’s hat gets set on fire left Pesci with “serious burns.”

“In addition to the expected bumps, bruises and general pains that you would associate with that particular type of physical humor, I did sustain serious burns to the top of my head during the scene where Harry’s hat is set on fire,” Pesci revealed. “I was fortunate enough to have professional stuntmen do the real heavy stunts.”

Joe Pesci About Working With Macaulay Culkin In ‘Home Alone’

    Macaulay with Stern and Pesci

On working with Culkin, Pesci added, “I remember Macaulay as being a really sweet kid and, even at his age, very professional. I intentionally limited my interactions with him to preserve the dynamic between his character, Kevin, and my character Harry. [I did not] want it to come across on the screen that we were in any way friendly. I wanted to maintain the integrity of the adversarial relationship.”

While the ‘Home Alone’ franchise churned out many films after ‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York’, it was only the first two films that featured the dynamic and fun trio of Pesci, Culkin and Stern. Would Pesci return for a third ‘Home Alone’ movie? The actor doesn’t think it’d happen because it’s too “difficult to replicate” the “innocence” of the original films. Well, that was some other kind of magic certainly.

“While you never say never, I think that it would be difficult to replicate not only the success but also the overall innocence of the originals,” Pesci said. “It’s a different time now; attitudes and priorities have changed in 30 years.”
