    Obi-Wan Kenobi: Ewan McGregor Reveals That He Rewatched The Skywalker Saga To Better Prepare Himself For His Role In Upcoming Series

    Ewan McGregor has played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, the adult version of Dan Torrance in the horror thriller Doctor Sleep, and Black Mask in the DC Extended Universe. And now, he is coming back as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the 2022 Disney+ miniseries of the same name which is all set to premiere in 2022.

    For the first time since 2005, Ewan McGregor returns to a galaxy far far away. It’s been just as long since he rejoined the Star Wars franchise. In George Lucas’ Star Wars prequel trilogy, McGregor played Obi-Wan Kenobi, a padawan of Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) who later became Anakin Skywalker’s instructor (Hayden Christensen).

    McGregor would not return to the role in live-action until Star Wars. Obi-Wan Kenobi, a special event series-opening May 27 on Disney+, despite making voice cameos in 2015’s The Force Awakens and 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, the Skywalker Saga’s conclusion.

    “I watched all of them to prepare for this because the last one I did, we shot Episode III in Sydney, Australia in 2003, I think. So it’s been quite some time — almost 20 years,” McGregor said during a virtual appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Admitting he “didn’t do them in one go,” 

    Ewan McGregor On Rewatching His Role

    Rewatching his debut role as the younger version of Alec Guinness’ hermit Jedi in 1999’s The Phantom Menace was “really interesting,” McGregor said.

    “It was such a huge thing to happen,” the Trainspotting star said about the blockbuster role that would reshape his career. “So to go back and watch that movie again was really great fun.”

    In 2002’s Attack of the Clones and 2005’s Revenge of the Sith, McGregor reprised his role as the Jedi Knight turned Jedi Master, as part of a prequel trilogy that was not as well-received as the iconic original trilogy starring Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford.

    “It was tricky at the time. They weren’t overwhelmingly embraced by everybody when they came out, our prequels,” he said. “It was nice to watch them now knowing that people love them. That the kids who we made them for at the time — they loved those films a lot. It was nice to watch them with that sense.”

    The narrative of Obi-Wan Kenobi begins ten years after the dramatic events of Star Wars. Revenge of the Sith, in which Obi-Wan Kenobi suffered his greatest defeat. Anakin Skywalker, his best friend and Jedi trainee, turned to the dark side as a terrible Sith Lord Darth Vader.

    Obi-Wan Kenobi begins with two episodes on Disney+ on Friday, May 27. It stars Ewan McGregor, Moses Ingram, Rupert Friend, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, and Indira Varma. Additionally, Sung Kang, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Benny Safdie, Kumail Nanjiani, and Hayden Christensen will appear in different roles. Beginning June 1, new episodes will premiere on Wednesdays.
