‘The Chronicles Of Narnia’: Everything To Know About Netflix’s New Adaptation Of C.S. Lewis’ Book Series

C.S. Lewis was a great litterateur and an amazingly gifted writer. Clive Staple Lewis aka C.S. Lewis had a great upbringing in his Irish household. The writer was an avid reader and a great admirer of mythology and fiction. During his lifetime, he has published works related to War, eclecticism, science fiction, and mythology. The great J.R.R Tolkien was a contemporary and a friend of the writer. He has published books like ‘Out of the Silent Planet’ trilogy, ‘The Great Divorce’, and ‘Mere Christianity’. But, one of the best sellers and the renowned classic in literature was ‘The Chronicles Of Narnia’.

The novel is a series of seven books. In 1950, ‘The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe’ was the first book. Since then, he published books chronicling the stories in Narnia. The books have sold over 100 million copies. The awe-inspiring pieces of literature have inspired many prominent literary figures and their books. Authors like Bill Willingham and J.K. In the first decade of the millennium, Disney tried to recreate the literary magic of Lewis’ world of Narnia. It adapted ‘The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe’, ‘Prince Caspian’, and ‘The Voyage of the Dawn Treader’. However, after the three films, the magic fizzled out and they could not create any substantial universe for the books. Netflix has a bewitching catalog of series and films adapted from books.

In 2018, the OTT platform struck a massive deal with The C.S.Lewis Company for the adaption of the seven classics into films and series for a global audience. In the multi-year deal, Netflix, along with Entertainment One, Vincent Sieber, and Douglas Gresham, the stepson of C.S. Lewis will serve as Executive Producers.

Matthew Aldrich, the creative giant behind the Academy and Golden Globes-winning film ‘Coco’ will be the creative head. In 2019, Netflix announced that the platform has roped in Aldrich “as the creative architect and oversee the development of all films and shows adapted from C.S. Lewis’ beloved Narnia universe for Netflix’. Matthew’s manager has hinted heavy focus on children in a Q&A session. But, there is no concrete confirmation about the development.

Ted Serandos, the Content Head and CEO of Netflix expressed his happiness and the responsibility that the platform has towards the project. He said, “C.S. Lewis’ beloved Chronicles of Narnia stories have resonated with generations of readers around the world. Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come”.

In November 2022, there was speculation making rounds that Greta Gerwig may be helming the project. Gerwig is one of the best contemporary feminist filmmakers of our times. She has already done an adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel ‘Little Women’ in 2019 with great finesse and an empathetic eye. Currently, she is working on Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling starrer ‘Barbie’. She has been an actor who turned director with her first solo feature venture ‘Lady Bird’. It would be interesting to see how she drives the narrative written by a man in a different century along with Matthew.
