Twitter Closes Brussels Office One Week After Digital Service Act Came Into Effect

On 24 November, Twitter packed up its business in Europe’s Brussels Office. The last two employees of the office Julia Mozer and Dario La Nasawalked out of the office a week before the closure. The two were responsible for Twitter’s digital policy in Europe, including compliance with the European Union’s disinformation code and the Digital Services Act, which aims to limit the spread of illegal content online. This closure took place amidst huge cutdowns in expenditure, mass layoffs, and the eight-dollar policy of the microblogging platform.

The closure of the Brussels Office followed the Digital Service Act which was implemented a week before this. Members of the European Union, after Twitter shut down its Brussels branch, fear that the company would not follow the norms of the newly implemented Act. Elon Musk the new CEO of the microblogging app is popular for standing adamant with his decisions even in a storm of disagreement. Why did Twitter wound up the Brussels Office?

According to Variety, though Brussels was a small office, it was a “crucial conduit to European policymakers,” Věra Jourová, the Vice President of the European Union’s disinformation code, told the Financial Times in a written statement, “I am concerned about the news of firing such a vast amount of staff of Twitter in Europe,”  However Jourová is putting her hopes with the microblogging platform “Twitter to fully respect the EU law and honor its commitments…., especially in the context of Russian disinformation warfare.”

Mozer and La Nasa claimed that the new CEO gave them an ultimatum to commit to a “hardcore working schedule”. The duo has been silent on whether they were coerced out of the office. Twitter made layoffs all over the world from India to France. Financial Times believes if Twitter continues with the termination of numerous employees then the company might go short-handed to keep up with the Digital Laws.

Elon Musk has brought a wave of radicle change in the microblogging app. The billionaire giant put a price tag of $8 on the verified blue tick. Many have criticized the CEO for letting people “purchase free speech” and making the authenticity of contributing writers questionable. Many have advised Elon on a modified version of the policy but he has shot them down. Elon had decided to relaunch the new blue tick flagship subscription however, it was paused.

Musk claimed that they would continue with the subscription until there was “high confidence of stopping impersonation.” The new Twitter Blue will be up for purchase from 29 November onwards. Meanwhile many have boycotted Twitter for fear that the once-trusted app is no longer safe. Musk has released restrictions on content moderation and even reinstated US former President Donald Trump.
