    Why Did Kris Wu Leave The K-Pop Band EXO?

    Canadian-Chinese singer and former member of EXO, Kris Wu is sentenced to 13 years in prison. Beijing court found him guilty of sexually abusing women between November and December 2020 and for the “crime of assembling a crowd to engage in sexual promiscuity” in 2018. After, he was accused of these offenses, many brands have cut ties with him.

    Since his name is popular on social media now, many K-Pop stans have tagged his name under one famous Korean boy band group. Wu was formerly a member of the K-Pop band, EXO, under SM Entertainment. Fans of EXO, EXO-L have gone on a rampage on social media to share their astonishment and anger upon the idol.

    When Did Kris Wu Leave SM Entertainment?

    Kris Wu, whose Chinese name is Li Jiaheng, started his career in 2012 as a member of the South Korean-Chinese boy group, EXO. He also led its subgroup, EXO-M. He and the members immediately became one of the most popular K-pop boy groups to ever debut, scoring global attention with their hit albums and songs.

    In 2014, he announced his departure from the group before the release of the Overdose album. He filed a lawsuit against his then-agency, SM Entertainment, to terminate his exclusive contract because the company reportedly never respected his opinions and thoughts about his health conditions.

    Why Did Li Jiaheng Leave EXO?

    Jiaheng has noted in an interview that SM entertainment does not care about their idol’s health and treat them like an “object”. He noted that the agency treated him like a “machine part” or an “object of control” while promoting the band. Wu also admitted not being able to fully adjust to the Korean training system.

    “It is difficult to get used to the Korean way of life. Learning Korean manners such as bowing to Sonbae (senior singers) is especially tricky,” Kris Wu said in one of his interviews. Tao, another EXO former member, expressed his anger after Kris Wu’s exit, using words like “ambition” and “betrayal” in the Weibo and Instagram posts he made to target him.
