Back in 2019, in a world that didn’t know what COVID-19 was yet, veteran filmmaker Martin Scorsese took a dig at Marvel films and compared them to “theme parks.” He also said it’s not real cinema.

Several actors from the MCU, including Robert Downey Jr., defended these films. Filmmakers like James Cameron, Francis Ford Coppola, and Alejandro González Iñárritu have also echoed this sentiment. But taking a closer look at the criticism, are they right?

Scorsese has made a career out of making films exclusively about white Christian males. Women in his stories have no place. When asked about it, the director said that he is too old to write strong female characters.

Tarantino on the other hand had said that he can’t helm a Marvel film because one has “to be a hired hand to do those things.” He also said that he wasn’t someone “looking for a job.”

Tarantino And Company Have Always Reacted Strongly To Their Own Work’s Criticism

The ‘Reservoir Dogs‘ director is known for using the n-word frequently in his films. He has reacted strongly to his own work’s criticism. “If you have a problem with my movies then they aren’t the movies to go see. Apparently I’m not making them for you“, he once said.

What we are seeing right now is a handful of filmmakers deciding what is “real cinema.” Cinema, just like any art form, is a totally subjective thing. What someone doesn’t like, might be someone else’s favorite.

In that case, directors behaving like gatekeepers to diminish something that’s loved by many don’t feel right in any way. Of course, Marvel and DC films’ are a glass thorough of capital and commercialization of cinema. Every month, they churn out content like a manufacturing unit. Most of their recent work has been criticized for it. However, belittling them as something inferior reeks of superiority and arrogance.

Simu Liu, the actor who portrayed the Chinese-American superhero Shang Chi in ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’, reacted to Tarantino and Scorsese’s comments. He tweeted, “If the only gatekeepers to movie stardom came from Tarantino and Scorsese, I would never have had the opportunity to lead a $400 million plus movie.” He further said, “I loved the ‘Golden Age’ too… but it was white as hell.”
