Taweret: Moon Knight’s Latest Episode Features An Intriguing New Entry

Disney+ Marvel series Moon Knight seems keen to include those elements from the Egyptian mythology too that didn’t mark a presence in the comics. The latest episode of the series has the viewers intrigued with a hippo-shaped creature entering the show. The hippo-shaped creature as seen in Episode 4 is explained to be an Egyptian goddess, Taweret.

The fourth episode of Moon Knight presented a prospect where the happenings of all the previous episodes seemed nothing more than just a figment of imagination. Towards the end of the episode, the viewers witness Mark Spector being shot by Arthur Harrow. The event, consequently, leads to Spector finding Grant. However, their meeting is cut short when the duo comes face to face with a hippo-shaped creature.

The creature is said to be Taweret, an Egyptian goddess of childbirth and fertility. Taweret doesn’t get a mention in the original Moon Knight comics. And thus, it seems like a try by the show’s makers to add further elements to the story to build up Spector’s connection to Egyptian mythology.

Taweret, the name means “The great one” and the goddess in the Episode is depicted as having the appearance of a hippo. However, her limbs and paws are those of a lion while having a back and tail of a crocodile. As explained, the goddess of childbirth and fertility is also known as “Lady of Heaven,” “Mistress of Pure Water,” “She Who Removes Water,” and “Mistress of the Horizon.

Antonia Salib who portrays Taweret in Moon Knight opened up about the character in an interview. “It felt like I was given license to create my character,” she told. “I think with having the time with a series, you’re really able to explore all these different characters. And the emotional journey that Steven and Mark are going through, you really flesh it out,” Salib told.

She continued, “Personally, it felt like such a collaborative process, which was brilliant for such a big organization. From the moment when I read the scenes when I was auditioning. And when I started working with the director Mohamed Diab and the costume team for VFX. It felt like I was given license to create my character and everyone was on board together.”
