Dune rules the BAFTA 2022 nominations

BAFTA 2022 nominations are out and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is ruling the list of the nominees. The science-fiction movie released in October last year. And has bagged a total of 11 nominations at the prestigious award. Following it is Jane Champion’s The Power of The Dog starring Benedict Cumberbatch. The movie has scored a total of 8 nominations at BAFTA.

The movie is based on a 1965 book by Frank Herbert of the same name. It tells the story of a distant future where humans can easily move through different planets. It was maybe the most-anticipated release of 2021, given its magnitude of production and cast.

The film’s director is Denis Villeneuve. He’s also the screenplay writer along with John Spaihts and Eric Roth. The cinematography is by Greig Fraiser, while the music department was in Hans Zimmer’s hands. The music director came on board for this project by turning down Christopher Nolan’s Tenet.

The cast includes the young but charismatic Timothée Chalamet as the lead. The young actor has proved his mettle in acting by his acts in films like Call Me By Your Name, Lady Bird, and Little Women. Apart from him, the cast includes Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, and Jason Momoa.

The film depicts the story of the family of Atreids of the Caladan planet. Leto Atreids is the head of the family. The story follows his son, Paul Atreids who fights off the dangers and corporations against his family. He meets a tribal Fremen, Chani there. The film takes place on the planet Arrakis. A desert with dangers laid deep in the sand, however, produces a crucial substance called Spice. The film covers the first part of the book. And the sequel of the film based on the other half will release in 2023.

    Dune’s Reception

The film which was originally slated for a November 2020 release was pushed forward a number of times. After a number of delays due to the pandemic it eventually released on 22 October. Upon the release, Warner Bros announced that this one too will follow the hybrid model for its release. The hybrid model is when a film is released on HBO Max too for 31 days from its initial release.

The decision wasn’t well-received by most of those involved in its making. Including the maker Denis Villeneuve and the other production house that funded the film. In a statement, Villeneuve said, “There is no love for cinema, nor the audience here. It is all about the survival of a telecom mammoth, one that is currently bearing an astronomical debt of more than $150 billion.”

“Filmmaking is a collaboration, reliant on the mutual trust of teamwork and Warner Bros. has declared they are no longer on the same team,” he added. Further stating that Dune is the best movie he’s ever made. Moreover, he said he invested three years in making it a unique big-screen experience.

Dune has scored 11 nominations in BAFTA, ranging over different elements of the movie.
