10 Movies That Should Have Been TV Shows

    Dune

    Dune

Frank Herbert’s Dune has seen several adaptations, from David Lynch’s polarizing 1984 version to the SyFy miniseries to Denis Villeneuve’s sweeping films. And although HBO is producing Dune: Prophecy, it’s a prequel based on Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson’s work, not the core saga. Considering the original six-book series spans thousands of pages, a long-form TV adaptation would have been the perfect fit.

    Eternals

    Eternals

After Avengers: Endgame, Marvel struggled with pacing in its many Phase 4 and 5 shows. But Eternals is the one project that genuinely needed the TV format. With 10 central heroes, a cosmic storyline stretching back thousands of years, and mythology too dense for a single film, episodic storytelling could have given each character room to breathe.

    The Dark Tower

    The Dark Tower

Stephen King’s Dark Tower series spans eight novels, blending Western, fantasy, and sci-fi elements into a world too sprawling for a single movie. Sony’s 2017 adaptation compressed portions of the story into one film, hoping to launch a franchise but weak box office returns ended those plans quickly. The material, however, was tailor-made for television. High-concept genre storytelling thrives on streaming, where audiences are more patient and open to complex world-building.

    World War Z

    World War Z

Fans of Max Brooks’ World War Z know the movie shares little with the novel beyond its title. Rather than adapt the book’s global, interview-style narrative, the film became a Brad Pitt–led action blockbuster. Despite earning solid box office returns, no sequel materialized. A TV format would have aligned more naturally with the novel’s episodic structure, allowing each region, outbreak story, and survivor perspective to shine.

    Eragon

    Eragon

Christopher Paolini wrote Eragon at just 15, launching a four-book fantasy saga known as The Inheritance Cycle. The 2006 film adaptation arrived during the height of interest in epic fantasy, yet it failed to ignite the same passion as The Lord of the Rings or Narnia. With dragons, mysticism, and a coming-of-age hero, the material fits the TV format far better.

    When Harry Met Sally

    When Harry Met Sally

When Harry Met Sally… would work perfectly as a TV show because the whole story is about two people slowly growing closer over many years. A series could follow Harry and Sally through their early arguments, awkward dating experiences, and the gradual, believable build-up of chemistry between them. The movie hints at long gaps and changes in their lives, and a show could explore those moments in more detail. Fans would get more humor, more tension, and more time to enjoy the enemies-to-friends-to-lovers journey that makes the film such a classic.

    The Princess Diaries

    The Princess Diaries

Mia Thermopolis suddenly finding out she’s a princess is a story that deserves more time than a couple of movies. A TV show could follow her as she adjusts to royal life, learns how to lead, and eventually prepares to become queen. There’s also plenty of room to explore her friendships, school life, and family relationships. And of course, Julie Andrews’ presence would make the show truly special.

    The Godfather

    The Godfather

The Godfather is one of the most famous stories in American cinema, and its characters and world are rich enough for a full TV series. A show could explore the Corleone family in much more detail; their relationships, conflicts, and rise to power. With new actors bringing fresh interpretations to iconic roles, younger viewers might connect with it more easily. Since modern audiences love long, character-driven dramas, a prestige remake could work extremely well.

    Black Widow

    Black Widow

Many fans hoped Black Widow would dive into Natasha Romanoff’s dark and complicated past, but the movie barely touched the deeper parts of her story. A TV series could have shown her training in the Red Room, the dangerous missions she carried out, and the emotional cost of breaking away from that life. These are big, heavy experiences that need time to unfold, which makes TV a better format.

    Beetlejuice

    Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice has such a weird, funny, and creative world that a TV show would be the perfect way to explore it. The movie hints at so many strange characters and rules in the afterlife, and a series could dive into all of that in a fun, episodic way. Fans from the ’80s and beyond would love seeing more stories set in the Netherworld instead of waiting for a sequel that may or may not capture the same charm.
