Pearl Jam Continues Live Show With The Help Of A Fan After Drummer Matt Cameron Drops Out Due To COVID-19

After testing positive for COVID-19, Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron had to sit out the band’s performance in Oakland, California on Thursday. However, the show went on with the help of a fan and pinch bats Josh Klinghoffer and Richard Stuverud. It was the first time in 24 years that he had missed one of their gigs.

Frontman Eddie Vedder shared with the crowd that Matt is a true artist. He loves music and one can think of Matt as a force of nature. That being said, Eddie shared that Matt could not prevent himself from contracting the disease. Cameron has tested COVID-19 positive. Eddie Vedder even shared that Cameron tested positive just a day ago.

Since Matt tested positive just a day before the big event, they could simply not cancel it. The band found some replacements too for Cameron!

“Postponing wasn’t an option and for us neither was canceling. So, we didn’t want to pull the plug and we couldn’t pull the plug. We’ve got our group here, we’ve got the equipment here and, most importantly, you’re here.

Klinghoffer, a touring member, played drums for the band’s rendition of Neil Young’s ‘Rockin’ in the Free World’. This song kicked off the show. Klinghoffer even drummed for songs like ‘Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town’,Why Go’, and ‘Corduroy’. For ‘Quick Escape’ and ‘Superblood Wolfmoon’, longtime Jeff Ament collaborator Stuverud took to the drum under his control.

During the show’s conclusion, “Yellow Ledbetter,” they also asked a fan named Josh Arroyo to sit in on drums. A YouTube video shows Arroyo, dressed in a T-shirt with the names of the band’s drummers, walking onto a well-lit stage to cheers from other fans. Earlier this month, the band paid their respect to the late Taylor Hawkins. They did so by performing ‘Cold Day in the Sun’ by the Foo Fighters, with Cameron taking the lead. He and Hawkins worked together on their side endeavor, the Nighttime Boogie Association. Pearl Jam is now on tour in support of Gigaton, following a two-year hiatus due to the epidemic.
