Heartstopper: Netizens Are Gushing Over The New LGBTQIA+ Drama On Netflix

Love is in the sultry, summer air! Netflix has recently added a new teen LGBTQIA+ drama to their plethora of teen dramas. Heartstopper is the new summer love story to take away your Summer-time sadness.

The series is about two, young school lads who fall in love with each other and navigate through the trials and tribulations of being themselves. The other characters Tao, Issac, and Elle have their stories running parallel, too. However, the series has garnered attention from netizens who do not have anything but praise to sing about the series.

Netflix has had a history of some iconic high school, teen dramas. Be it 13 Reasons Why?, Sex Education, Julie, and the Phantoms, Never Have I Ever, etc., However, Netflix is pushing the envelope further and has introduced a new high school, teen drama with a narrative following the lives of two queer individuals.

Netflix adapted the series from graphic webcomics with the same title created by Alice Oseman. The comics had sold over 100,0000 copies till March 2022.

It is not easy to have a book-to-movie adaptation. The literary fans are brutal about the nuances that the film would miss. So, the expectations were already higher from the series. However, the netizens have welcomed the adaptation with open arms.

The series follows the story of two young boys in a secondary school. Charlie (Joe Locke), has wallflower issues, anxious, but is still a very confident gay boy owning his sexuality. Another character is Nick (Kit Connor) who is a rugby player with a heart of gold. They both attend an all-boys British School and they strike a connection when they meet.

The past of Charlie still haunts him. When his peers found out that he is gay, he was subjected to bullying and homophobia. Charlie feels good about Nick. Slowly, a bond develops between the two. Charlie starts having a crush on Nick, but as Nick is straight, he is afraid to confide in him. But love is a strange thing, it finds you in the most unexpected places.

Along with these two, there are parallel stories of their friends. Especially Elle (Yasmin Finney). She is a transwoman who shifted from boys’ grammar school to the girls’ equivalent. Though all her friends are in the former school, the shifting process leads to many jabs hurled at her.

Yasmin said about playing the character and her own experience, “For me, school was the same. There’s always been [these] voices of toxic masculinity that just clearly aren’t educated enough. And even if they are, they just want to… have a laugh, but there’s a point where it crosses the line and I think that’s what Heartstopper highlights. It goes on every day in high school.”

Joe Locke who plays Charlie has added in his bio, “Olivia Colman is my mother in law.” Isn’t it adorable?
