From Actors to Comedians to the General audiences, everybody has seemed to make an opinion about Will Smith and Chris Rock‘s Oscar incident. Amidst all this Comedian and actor Jim Carrey has spoken his mind on the matter. “Prince of Bel-Air” actor has sent shockwaves around the world by hitting Chris Rock on live tv. Chris has made a joke about Will’s wife Jada Smith, which didn’t go well as Will resorted to Violence and got physical with the comedian.
A heated debate has ensued since, about who was wrong and who was right or if both parties were at fault. But seems like Carrey has already chosen his side as he has condemned those who supported Smith on the night.
Jim Carrey Criticized Will Smith As Well As The Oscar Audience
Carrey appeared on CBS’ This Morning on Tuesday, 29 March. He stated that he was ‘sickened by the standing ovation,’ referring to the Audience’s Loud applause of Will Smith’s Best Actor win. Jim further said, “Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we aren’t the cool club anymore.”
Show host Gayle King told Carrey that Rock is not going to file any complaint. To this, the actor replied, “maybe Chris doesn’t want any hassle.” Jim then went on to say that if he was in Chris Rock’s position he would have acted very differently. Jim also said that Smith’s unjust action will haunt him forever.
Carrey continued, “I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for 200 million dollars because that video is going to be there forever, it’s going to be ubiquitous, that insult is gonna last a very long time. If you want to yell from the audience and show disapproval or say something on Twitter. you do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face ‘cuz they said words.”
Final Verdict Of Jim Carrey On The Matter
Show host, King reminded Carrey that things had escalated between the two men. Carry responded, “It didn’t escalate, it came out of nowhere because Will has something going on inside him that’s frustrated.” Jim Denounced Smith’s action as he said that his deed cast a wrong spell over King Richard’s cast and overall Oscar in general.
Jim finished with, “I wish him the best, I really do, I don’t have anything against Will Smith. He has done great things. But that was not a good moment. It cast a pall over everybody’s shining moment. A lot of people worked really hard to get to that place. And to have their moment in the sun, to get their award for the really hard work they did, it is no mean feat to go through all the stuff you have to go through when you are nominated for an Oscar. It’s a gauntlet of devotion you have to do. It was such a selfish moment that cast a pall over the whole thing.”
Jim Carrey is not the only comedian or actor who came in support of Chris Rock. Many others including Kathy Griffin, Richard Williams, and Howard Stern have condemned Will Smith so far. In a later development, Will Smith issued an apology through an Instagram post.
