Recently, Denzel Washington opened up about what transpired at the Oscars last Sunday. The actor was seen comforting Will Smith following Smith and Chris Rock‘s slap incident. On Saturday morning, Washington spoke at the author and Bishop T.D. Jakes’ leadership conference about his career and religion, and Jakes asked him about what transpired around Smith and Rock there at the Oscars.
What Did Denzel Washington Say On The Chris-Will Incident?
“Well, there’s a saying, ‘When the devil ignores you, then you know you’re doing something wrong.’ The devil goes, ‘Oh no, leave him alone, he’s my favorite.’ Conversely, when the devil comes at you, maybe it’s because he’s trying to do something right. And for whatever reason the devil got ahold of that circumstance that night,” Washington said to Jakes at the stage while a lot of people listened.
During the commercial breaks at the Oscars, Washington was spotted conversing with Smith, Tyler Perry, and Smith’s publicist, after Smith smacked Rock for cracking a remark about Jada Pinkett Smith. Smith praised Washington and added that Washington cautioned him, “At your brightest moment, be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you,” during his victory speech for best actor.
“Fortunately there were people there. Not just me, but others, Tyler Perry, came immediately right over there with me. [Said] some prayers. I don’t wanna say what we talked about, but there but for the grace of God go any of us. Who are we to condemn? I don’t know all the ins and outs of the situation, but I know the only solution was prayer, the way I see it,” the “Training Day” actor mentioned.
Will Smith’s Speech Of Acceptance
Smith’s public backlash over the smack has evolved into his most serious professional issue. This week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences opened an inquiry into the attack, and Smith resigned from the organization on Friday.
“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home,” Smith stated on last Friday. “I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work.” In the end, he added that he was “heartbroken.”

Chris Rock Breaks His Silence
Rock addressed the event in Boston for his first stand-up act after the slap, saying he’s still “processing what occurred” and will address it properly at a later date.
“I don’t have a bunch of shit about what happened, so if you came to hear that, I have a whole show I wrote before this weekend,” Rock opened up on the night show. “I’m still kind of processing what happened. So, at some point, I’ll talk about that shit. And it will be serious and funny.”
