    Making a good movie is a complex enterprise, but a sequel is a mad proposition. The mere mention of a sequel fills the industry’s heart with dread. But despite all that reasoning, ‘The Godfather Part II‘ and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King‘ have won the Best Picture Oscars and been moneymakers at the box office. 

    It is believed that an effort to capture lightning in the bottle will result in a crash and burn. But the movies mentioned above have broken the algorithm behind making movie sequels. These movies are impressive sequels and great films that provide an enriching storytelling experience.

    Francis Ford Coppola went through hell and back and forth while making ‘The Godfather.’ Coppola always had mountains to climb, from getting involved with mobsters to fighting with the studio executives to cast a then-unknown Al Pacino. Not to mention, he was always going over the budget.

    Eventually, the blood, sweat, and tears worked. ‘The Godfather‘ was not only the highest-grossing film of 1972, but it won three of its seven nominations, including the award for Best Picture. ‘The Godfather Part II‘ would also replicate the success of its predecessor, winning Best Picture among its six Oscar wins in 1974.
