Why Timothée Chalamet Was Reluctant To Be In ‘Bones And All’?

The director-actor duo of the Academy Award-winning film ‘Call Me By Your Name’ is back! Luca Guadagnino and Timothée Chalamet have brought a gory tale of love and marginalization with the spine chilling ‘Bones And All’. The film was released in theaters in November 2022, but it has been doing rounds at International Film Festivals. The Chalamet starrer was screened at the Venice Film Festival in September 2022, where it received a standing ovation for 8.5 minutes.

The film is running in theaters and garnering very positive reviews from the audience and critics as well. Along with Timothée, Taylor Russell also stars in the film. Luca and Chalamet, two formed a formidable friendship since their first collaboration which made Timothée the household name. Luca was also looking to work with him even before he conceptualized the film. When the idea came to the ‘Little Women’ actor, he was hesitant to be on board.

The Script Of ‘Bones And All’ Was Daunting For Timothée Chalamet

In the new collaboration with Luca, Chalamet is playing a runway, impoverished, and beautiful Lee. Taylor is playing Maren, who is a cannibal. Maren is a shy kid whose father abandons her and she goes on a quest to find her mother and the reason why she is like what she is. This tale of forbidden love, marginalization, and cannibalism developed skepticism for the actor at first glance.

In an interview with Narcity, Chalamet talked about how the material was daunting which did not convince him. He said, “The script and the material felt daunting so that’s what made it not an easy yes. The fact that it was Luca at the helm and something that felt at the same time totally different from our first project and yet as sincere […] it felt totally right.”

It was Guadagnino’s perspective and to feel like an outsider was something that helped him to wrap his head around the material. The actor said, “What would feel like a marginalization or a subjecting anybody in society to feeling like an outsider […] it strengthens that bond because you feel so grateful and pure in your connection with another person when you find it because it’s so rare and you cherish it all the more”.

He added, “I also loved the idea of going to the Midwest with Luca and getting to see what his perspective was”.

The director first collaborated with him on the 2017 summer love story Call Me By Your Name’. It was based on André Aciman’s book with the same title. Timothée played the smart, witty, and vulnerable teenager, Elio. He meets his father’s summer apprentice Oliver, a young adult, who is self-assured, and mystic, but grows fond and closer to his mentor’s son. The softness, yet the passion Chalamet brought was promising and he emerged as one of the best actors from the young lot.

But, the success that he achieved did not change anything between him and Luca. In an interview with IndieWire, Luca was all praise for the actor. He said that the two kept in touch and never abandoned each other after the film’s success. “It’s not as if I left Timothée at the height of his booming success, and then I found him four years later. We kept close. I knew that there was not much time to wait until we worked together, but only for the right project.”

Talking about their bond, the director said, “To see the humbleness and rigor with which he made his first steps toward stardom — this bright, feverish young man became this planetary star — made me so proud. There is a very beautiful bond between me.”
