Our Flag Means Death: Director David Jenkins Says He Has Other Options If HBO Max Doesn’t Renew Series for A Second Season

The HBO Max hit show, Our Flag Means Death has come to an end. The climax of the show left the audience on a cliffhanger. It is a period-comedy drama of an aristocrat-turned- pirate where Stede Bonnet plays Rhys Darby. However, a dark cloud lingers on the show as the creator David Jenkins is uncertain about the renewal of the show. This uncertainty may not lead to the conclusion of Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet’s love story. The creator got in a conversation with The Wrap to discuss how Discovery and Warner Bros. could affect the new season and what he plans to do if the show’s second season does not see the light of the day.

David Jenkins sat with The Wrap to discuss the love being poured on the show making it the most in-demand show. He addressed the show’s tumultuous future on HBO Max. Jenkins said, “Yeah, no news on that. It’s hard because of the analytics. And HBO Max. And then, you know, HBO, Max has gone through a lot.

Talking about the merger, the creator said, “They’ve got this huge merger. People get scared for their jobs, rightfully so. And then their metrics are their own, they don’t really share. They don’t really share their viewership data even with us. It’s pretty unclear what’s going to happen.”

In another interview, David and Taika Waititi updated about the next season. While commenting, Waititi, who plays Blackbeard, said, “I don’t know anything. I just think that they should because it makes sense. Also, I need to know what happens next.”

To this Jenkins added, “It’s a rough one to not pick up on after what happened at the end of it. It’s a particularly rough one. I hope they figure it out, and they want to do more. I know everyone in the show wants to. Just to go on [social media] and see it trend for like two weeks feels unreal. It’s so gratifying, even not knowing if you’re renewed, to see that people liked it that much.”

The uncertainty around season two does not deter David to think about the future course. He is certain about what “direction to take it to.” About the cliffhanger that the first season ended with, Jenkins and the team are working on how to maintain the continuity and direct it.

He said, “I think there are ways to do it that are less painful. For me, that’s just the story I wanted to see in the first season. I think, if you show them getting together, I mean, part of a rom-com is heartache. And, you know, are they going to overcome that. It ends almost like where the second acts of the rom-com story would end. And to me that’s always satisfying. If it ends that way, it makes you want to come back.”
