‘This Is Us’ Creator Dan Fogelman On Series Finale’s Last Lines, Possibility Of A Spin-off

The final episode of ‘This Is Us’ is here and we are going through a bevy of emotions. In honor of the NBC family drama’s series finale, creator/executive producer Dan Fogelman broke down the episode and answered questions about key moments and scenes, including his choice of final lines, as well as his decision to not show the Big Three’s eulogies for their mother.

He also discussed unused material, Randall’s political future, prospective spinoffs, and more. As much as fans will miss the show, these little details are bound to provide some comfort.

In the back of his mind, Dan always saw Jack and Rebecca just sharing their love for one another as the episode’s finale rolled. He believed this original love tale was the ideal phrase to close on. According to Fogelman, the last train scene discussion between Jack and Rebecca was one of the most difficult ones to write in the finale. In fact, in his script, Fogelman characterized the last shot like this:

“Interior: Living Room. Jack is sitting down on the couch, his family is laughing and wrestling and playing Pin the Tail On the Donkey. He’s taking them in.”

The creator shed light on this reason. That was the way it was written, and there were several reasons behind it. “First and foremost, so much of the last episode was about people crying and saying these things to Rebecca, and although Randall could deliver the ideal eulogy, what more is he going to say about his mother at this point that he hasn’t already spoken on the show. So, according to Dan, it was partially it from a logistical standpoint. Dan, on the other hand, lost his mother in a similar way. So, on the day of the shooting, everything was more like an improvisation.,” he said.

    What About Randall’s Political Future?

Randall’s next political journey is probably the closest Dan can go on the show to a Sopranos-style episode ending in a blackout. He claims that the audience is free to make up their own story about what happens to him.

Does he even decide to run at the end, do him and Beth decide they’d rather settle at home? If he runs, how much trashing does he get? Does he win?

Dan also shared that a spinoff of the series is not in his mind as of now and for a movie, he does not know about it yet.
