It was at the American International Toy Fair in New York City that the Barbie doll appeared for the first time. She was the creation of Ruth Handler of the Mattel, Inc.
She was inspired by the German Bild Lilli doll in 1956. This doll was made inspired by a cartoon character that appeared in a West German newspaper.
As the model was appreciated, the development of the doll slowly began. The first ever Barbie doll was sold in 1958.
The doll has a full name that goes as Barbara Millicent Roberts. Usually, the dolls are 11 inches tall.
When mothers became too critical of the doll, Mattel started to broadcast commercials to the children. This was the first ever toy company to do so.
Barbie is in itself a work of art. But in turn, the glamorous toy has also inspired many arts, photographs, novels, and cartoons
The latest on the list is the movie ‘Barbie’ starring Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie. It is directed by Greta gerwig and will be out in July 2023.
Though there has been no steep rise in the sales of the doll, it is sure that still every year millions are being sold.
