Coachella Music Festival: Origin And Significance

WRITTEN BY SUMI DEKA

Coachella Music Festival is held every year at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California in the Coachella Valley in the Colorado Desert.

Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen were the masterminds behind the event and Goldenvoice, a subsidiary of AEG Presents is the organizer.

The festival originated back in 1993 from a concert where Pearl Jam performed at the Empire Polo Club as they boycotted venues controlled by Ticketmaster.

It led to the inaugural Coachella Festival held over two years in October 1999. The event returned on an annual basis from April 2001.

It was expanded to a third day in 2007 and a second weekend in 2012. Organizers started to allow spectators to camp on the grounds in 2003.

The event has been showcasing well-known musical artists alongside emerging artists and reunited groups. It is also one of the most famous music festivals in the US and the world.

The event held new records for festival attendance and gross revenues from 2013 to 2015. It was attended by 250,000 people leading to profits of $114.6 million in 2017.

Following the success of the festival, Goldenvoice established additional music festivals like the annual Stagecoach country music festival, the Big 4 thrash metal festival, and Desert Trip.
