St Edward's Crown: Story Of The Coronation Crown Of King Charles III

WRITTEN BY NISHANT BHISE

King Charles III will be ceremoniously crowned as the monarch of the United Kingdom on May 6, 2023.

During the ceremony, he will be crowned with the St. Edward's Crown during investiture.

It was used for the last time to crown Queen Elizabeth II as the queen of the United Kingdom in 1953.

The current St Edward's Crown dates back to 1661, when Charles II was crowned as the King of the British monarch. It was commissioned to the royal goldsmith, Robert Vyner.

The Crown weighs 2.23 kg with 444 precious stones which consists of amethysts, sapphires, garnets. It has four crosses-pattées and four fleurs-de-lis.

After Charles II's coronation, George V revived the tradition of crowning St Edward's Crown in 1911.

King Charles III will also be anointed with holy oil before the investiture ceremony. The ceremony has been in existence since 1066. The Archbishop of Canterbury will carry out the tradition.

The Archbishop explained that the tradition forms a link between the Coronation, the Bible, and the Holy Land.
