‘My Hero Academia’: Why Himiko Toga Can’t Use Shigaraki Tomura’s Quirk?

In the colorful universe of ‘My Hero Academia‘, quirks are special traits of protagonists that give them superpowers. Some of the most intriguing quirks in the series include Shigaraki Tomura’s Decay which has the power to unmake anything with a touch.

That is why it is interesting to ask why Himiko Toga, a malicious character who specializes in mimicry, has not tried to use Shigaraki Tomura’s Decay. There are some interesting limitations to Toga’s quirk so let’s dive into it.

The Nature Of Shigaraki’s Decay And Toga’s Quirk

Decay is an interesting quirk that only becomes active if you touch something with your bare hands. Shigaraki is only able to disarm people by touching them so that his skin’s disintegration process takes effect.

This limitation is significant to explain why Toga cannot apply Shigaraki’s quirk. Toga’s quirk, Transform, gives her the ability to imitate people by taking a blood sample from them. Although she gets transformed and can mimic the likeness of her opponents, she cannot mimic their personalities.

The mimicry ability operates on the exterior shell of the person: making faces and imitating the voice. It doesn’t endow her with the inherent endowment or potency of the subject she disguises as.

It is this distinction that lays the basis for understanding why she cannot use Decay. Despite Toga having the Devour Quirk, even if she gets close enough to draw Shigaraki’s blood, she’ll only be able to use his face cloning as a weapon. She would not acquire the opportunity to master the status called Decay.

The Limitations of Transform

The transform quirk of Toga has its own set of drawbacks. Although she has been able to imitate how people look and how they sound she cannot imitate how they think or act. This is a very basic area of inadequacy for her. It stops her from being endowed with the powers of those that she appears to be.

In Decay’s case, the ability is connected with Shigaraki’s physical body and his quirk. It is not a lesson that could be passed along or copied in this avenue of learning. The transform quirk of Toga is too basic to mimic the internal dynamics and strength of Decay.
