Joaquin Phoenix – ‘Beau Is Afraid’
The method acting master Joaquin Phoenix, despite being a marvelous actor, was not expected to make it to this year’s list — perhaps because of the movie for which he has been nominated. He has been nominated for the category Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Comedy for his role in Ari Aster’s ‘Beau Is Afraid‘. Many were surprised were see his name on the list of nominations.
Gary Oldman – ‘Slow Horses’
Gary Oldman is a seasoned actor, mostly popular for his versatile roles. He is another nomination on the Globes’ list, similar to Phoenix’s, that caught everyone off guard. The veteran actor got a nod for his comedic performance in the series ‘Slow Horses‘. The UK-based series was not widely acknowledged across the globe. However, it has an excellent showcase of Oldman’s versatility. The genre for which he has been nominated comes off as a surprise more than for his acting.

Alma Pöysti – ‘Fallen Leaves’
‘Fallen Leaves‘ has been gaining recognition among the best films this year. Alma Pöysti playing the lead in the movie, has bagged a nomination on the list for the best actress despite tough competition. Though the deadpan comedy movie with Finnish roots was celebrated, it was not widely recognized until recently. Pöysti’s performance was exceptional, but her name making it to the Golden Globes’ list was an unexpected development for many. The international diversity of the voting pool has likely contributed to this delightful surprise.
‘Beef’
A recent Netflix release ‘Beef‘ is an offbeat, rather abstract series that also made an unexpected entry to the Globes nomination. The series explores the absurdism in the unsettling and uniquely American life, starring Ali Wong and Steven Yeun. The show has earned three nominations at the Golden Globes this year, with the lead cast of the show also cashing in separate nominations for themselves. Even though the show performed well at the Emmys, its recognition at the Golden Globes was a pleasant surprise — mostly because of the unprecedented theme of the fairly new show.
‘Past Lives’ – Non-English-Language Film Category
‘Past Lives‘, despite being an American film with English and Korean dialogue, has been nominated for the Best Non-English-Language Film category. An A24 creation, the movie delves into the relationship of two childhood friends over the course of 24 years. The movie gives an account of the complications of adult relationships through the points of view of the two lead characters as they contemplate the nature of their bonding and how it evolves over the years. Starring Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and John Magaro, the movie has largely been miscategorized, though we believe it is a movie word being awarded.
With the nominations now in the public domain to contemplate, we all await the January ceremony. The host of the show has not been confirmed yet, while reports are stating that several stars have declined the offers to host it, landing the awards authorities in soup.
