Alicia Vikander Reveals Why First-Class Flights And Five-Star Rooms Made Her ‘Most Sad’ At The Height Of Fame

Fame is a fickle thing for sure. It’s hard to attain it and even harder to maintain it. But what about dealing with success when you aren’t accustomed to the celebrity lifestyle? Well, this is a battle Alicia Vikander fought at the height of her fame. The ‘Tomb Raider’ actress recently opened up about her initial years in Hollywood. She recalled the time Nikolaj Arcel’s Oscar-nominated ‘A Royal Affair’ made her a household name and caused film offers to role in. It was a time she had a lot of work but little peace.

While talking about her struggles, Vikander also detailed her “extreme, painful” miscarriage before welcoming her first child with her husband Michael Fassbender. Her added agony was that she had played a character who suffered pregnancy losses in ‘The Light Between Oceans’. The memories made the phase even more excruciating for the actress.

The ‘Irma Vep’ star Alicia Vikander remembered the time she stepped into the spotlight and sadness engulfed her in an interview with The Times. The 33-year-old Swedish actress said, “When, in other people’s eyes, I was at my height of fame, I was the most sad. I kept telling myself, ‘Take it in. It is incredible.’ But I didn’t know what to do. There were all these first-class flights, five-star rooms. But I was always by myself. I was by myself.”

The Swedish star’s professional journey has been spectacular, albeit her personal issues. Her sci-fi film ‘Ex Machina’ was a big hit and she also took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for ‘Danish Girl’ in 2016.

Alicia Vikander met her now-husband, Michael Fassbender, while filming ‘The Light Between Oceans’ in 2014. They dated for a while, went their separate ways, and once again united. Today, they have a beautiful family with a 17-month-old son. However, motherhood didn’t come easy to the actress.

She described how she suffered a miscarriage before welcoming her first child with her husband. The experience was even more disheartening because she had played a character who suffered multiple miscarriages in ‘The Light Between Oceans’. The trauma deepened because she kept reminiscing about her time during the film’s shoot. Vikander explained, “We have a child now, but it took us time. The miscarriage was so extreme, painful to go through and, of course, it made me recall making that film. That film has another meaning now.”

Her son’s birth was certainly a turning point in Vikander’s life. “I now have a whole new understanding of life in general. That’s pretty beautiful, and obviously will give a lot to any of my work in the future,” she said about expanding her family in 2021.
