Fame is indeed a two-edged sword and no one knows it better than a star who is loved by millions. Andrew Garfield, who is best known for his role as Spider-Man, has revealed the lengths he scaled just so he doesn’t get recognized in public.
Garfield has been looking pretty sharp lately and has a reason to feel so. But it hasn’t been the same — surprisingly by choice. On a recent episode of ‘The A24 Podcast’, Garfield told Harris Dickinson from ‘The Iron Claw’ when he revealed an interesting detail of his day-to-day life while he was playing Spidey.
Andrew Garfield Used Some Unique Antics To Avoid Public Attention
On the podcast, Andrew Garfield told Harris Dickinson that he always felt underprepared for the role, even though he is admittedly in love with the character now. “With all the Spider-Man stuff, I kind of had this allergic response like, ‘I know I’m not ready for this,’ in a way,” he shared, recalling his early stint as the Marvel superhero.
The journey of fame, it turns out, wasn’t all superhero glamor. Garfield admitted that he wasn’t quite prepared for the intense scrutiny that came with playing Peter Parker. “I know I’m not ready for this level of scrutiny,” he said with a laugh recalling the antics of his olden days as he tried to shun attention.
“So ‘I’m gonna grow a really horrible beard, and I’m gonna wear really f—ed up clothes, and I’m gonna, I’m gonna chase down paparazzi and try and talk to them,'” he recalled thinking and then doing it at the time.
Andrew Garfield Recalls Shooting Photographers With A Sharp Question
Andrew Garfield did not stop at disguising himself to avoid attention, he got very direct with the paparazzi at one point. He took it to the extreme, as he once approached the photographers and asked a rather pointed question: “Why are you doing this? “
Garfield now looks back with a mix of amusement and relief, describing his younger self as “really scared” of losing his sense of self amid all the attention. “I think I was really like, ‘I don’t, I don’t wanna lose the thing that, the thing that matters, which is the self…,” he added.

In typical British style, he joked, saying he felt like “a complete wanker” even admitting it.
Garfield first played Spider-Man in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ (2012), followed by ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ (2014). While Tom Holland has been a part of the character lately, Garfield and his predecessor Tobey Maguire appeared in 2021’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ together for a surprise, and every age group loved it.
