After the unexpected interruption during Billy Joel‘s concert special, The 100th: Billy Joel, at Madison Square Garden, CBS issued an official statement on Monday seeking an apology. In the statement, the network apologized for the mishap citing a programming timing error. It clarified that the error caused the special to end prematurely.
In the apology statement published by Billboard, a CBS spokesperson clarified, “A network programming timing error ended last night’s Billy Joel special approximately two minutes early in the Eastern and Central Time Zones.”
Seeking an apology from Joel, the statement further read, “We apologize to Mr. Joel, his fans, our affiliated stations, and our audience whose viewing experience was interrupted during the last song.” The network also made amends for the inconvenience, announcing plans to rebroadcast the entire concert special, BILLY JOEL: THE 100TH – LIVE AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, on April 19th at 9:00 PM ET/PT.
Fans Can Expect Billy Joel To Perform Again At Madison Square Garden
After the said mishap, viewers reported that the show that was originally scheduled to air from 9-11 p.m. on CBS, was delayed by about half an hour. The delay reportedly occurred because of the network’s live coverage of the Masters golf tournament.
The climactic conclusion of the concert, including Joel’s iconic ballad ‘Piano Man‘ from 1973, was consequently cut off for many viewers. The screen abruptly transitioned to local news broadcasts instead.
However, with the apology from CBS, fans can be reassured that Joel would return to Madison Square Garden for two more performances on April 26 and May 9. Other than this concert, Joel is also set to go on a summer tour of a baseball stadium with several performances across November.
