“He’s One of the Great Actors”: Christopher Nolan’s Latest Christian Bale Comments Have Fans Hoping for Another Collaboration

Christopher Nolan is bringing back one of his most divisive early films, and he is giving it a real visual makeover along the way.

The director has confirmed that ‘The Prestige‘, his 2006 Victorian thriller with Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman, is heading back to theaters on January 21, 2027, timed to the film’s 20th anniversary.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan made clear this won’t just be a straight reprint. The original 35mm anamorphic footage, shot by cinematographer Wally Pfister, is being blown up for 70mm projection, and the conversion work starts in the next few weeks.

Nolan said he recently watched a 35mm print of the film just to check how it had held up, and he came away impressed by how good Pfister’s camerawork still looks two decades on. He had similar praise for production designer Nathan Crowley, and said it’s really the combination of what those two did that’s going to make the bigger format worth seeing.

The re-release news came with a bigger tease attached. Asked if he could see himself working with Christian Bale again, the actor who has led four of his films, including ‘The Prestige’ and the whole Dark Knight trilogy, Nolan didn’t hold back. “He’s one of the great actors of his generation, and I’ve had tremendous experiences with him,” he told THR. That’s a pretty warm and direct compliment coming from a director who usually keeps comments about past collaborators short.

It’s a notable thing to say given how long it’s been since the two worked together. They haven’t been on a set together since ‘The Dark Knight Rises‘ wrapped in 2012. Since then, Nolan went on to make ‘Interstellar‘, ‘Dunkirk‘, ‘Tenet‘, ‘Oppenheimer‘ and ‘The Odyssey‘. Bale’s fingerprints haven’t totally left Nolan’s work, though. His latest release based on Homer’s epic is said to carry some visual and thematic echoes of characters Bale has played for him before, like Alfred Borden from ‘The Prestige‘ and Bruce Wayne from the Batman movies.

‘The Prestige‘ itself has gone through a real critical reassessment since it first came out. Based on Christopher Priest’s novel, it follows two rival stage magicians in 1890s London, Jackman’s Robert Angier and Bale’s Alfred Borden. They get caught in a rivalry that keeps escalating as each tries to outdo the other’s tricks. The supporting cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Michael Caine, Andy Serkis, and David Bowie in one of his final film roles. Even with that cast and a script built around Nolan’s usual narrative twists, the film only made $109 million worldwide against a $40 million budget when it came out. It’s found a much bigger audience since then through home video and streaming, and its reputation has kept growing.

This isn’t new territory for Nolan. ‘Interstellar‘ got its own IMAX re-release in 2024 for its tenth anniversary. It’s not confirmed yet whether The Prestige will get a similar large-format IMAX push alongside the 70mm run. However, even the standard rerelease should be enough to draw in film fans who want to see its dark, shadowy visuals and practical magic sequences the way they were originally shot.

For now, fans have a confirmed date for the re-release and a genuinely open question about a fifth Nolan-Bale collaboration. Nothing’s been officially announced, but Nolan’s comments leave little doubt that he’s open to it. Given the chemistry the two have built since ‘Batman Begins‘, it might just be a matter of time before they’re back on a set together.
