Which Performance Tradition Is Taylor Swift Changing And Why?
Taylor Swift is back to doing her Eras Tour performances after a short hiatus. She resumed her performances in February from Tokyo, followed by a show in Melbourne. During her Melbourne show, the 34-year-old singer announced that she would no longer restrict herself from performing any of her acoustic “surprise songs” more than once on the tour.
“That was to challenge me to really get to all the ones that I just don’t naturally gravitate towards, and I feel really proud about having done that,” the ‘Bad Blood‘ songstress said.
“But this is sort of a public service announcement to everyone who might be anywhere else on the tour, or whatever, or watching this — we have a lot of people, we’re very lucky to have a lot of people watch this on the internet and care about these shows if they’re not here,” she said.
“I’ve just been kind of rethinking, and I’ve been thinking I want to be as creative as possible with the acoustic set moving forward and I don’t want to limit anything or say, ‘If I played this song, I can’t play it again,’” Swift added.
“So, from now on, I don’t want to take any paint colors out of the paintbox or tools out of the toolbox,” Taylor said.
“I want to be able to play songs more than once if I feel like it and I want to be able to make changes to songs. Does that sound OK?” she lovingly asked her fans.
The announcement was met with resounding applause from the 96,000 attendees at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Taylor Swift Presents Fans With “Surprise Songs” Right After Making The Announcement
Right after the announcement, Swift immediately put her new approach into action. The singer treated her audience to a mashup of ‘Come Back… Be Here‘ from her ‘Red‘ album and ‘Daylight‘ from her ‘Lover‘ album.
The surprises continued as she also went on to play a piano rendition of ‘Teardrops on My Guitar’, showing Swift’s versatility and willingness to experiment with her performances.
This change in Swift’s acoustic set strategy follows her recent announcement of a new album, ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ during the 2024 Grammys. As she wraps up her three Melbourne shows, Swift expressed gratitude to her fans on Instagram as she recalled the unforgettable moments shared with over 288,000 attendees.
“Melbourne, what do I even say to you after over 288,000 of you came and danced with us in the last 3 nights ??! That was unforgettable. You were on another LEVEL. Thank you for the memories. I’ll revisit the ones from this weekend often,” she wrote on Sunday while posting a series of images and videos from her recent Australia concerts.
Fans are now excited about her next stop set for Sydney’s Accor Stadium on February 23.
