Harry Styles might have just lost an iconic role and it has everything to do with what he is! The “As It Was” hitmaker lost the chance of playing the legendary Elvis Presley because he’s “already an icon.”
Sources have revealed that he was eager to slip into Elvis Presley’s blue suede shoes for Baz Luhrmann’s biopic. But unfortunately for him, the role went to Austin Butler.
This is heartbreaking news for Styles – losing the lead role in a film that received a 12-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival. But, he is also being called an icon by the incredibly talented Luhrmann himself.
Luhrmann Tells Why He Rejected Harry Styles
“Harry is a really talented actor,” Luhrmann said on the “Fitzy & Wippa” podcast on Monday. “I would work on something with him … but the real issue with Harry is, he’s Harry Styles. He’s already an icon.”
“Harry and I came to a place, genuinely I mean, he was just desperate to put the suit on and explore. He’s such a great spirit and I have nothing but great things to say about Harry Styles,” he added.
The filmmaker also revealed his working style. Apparently, he doesn’t cast through auditions. Instead, he’ll host “rich workshops,” adding that Butler was simply “born to play” the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. “You know, we can talk about it now, he like loses his mom at the same age that Elvis did.”
Butler has previously worked in films such as ‘Once Upon a Time in … Hollywood‘ and ‘The Dead Don’t Die.’
Austin As Presley Put A Pause On His Life for Two Years
Butler has admitted that he shut himself off from the rest of the world. This was done in a desperate bid to surrender himself to the role.
“I basically put the rest of my life on pause for two years,” Butler said at the film festival last month. “I just absorbed everything that I possibly could.”
Harry Styles was last seen in the MCU’s Eternals. He had a short cameo role as Thanos’ brother, Eros (aka Starfox). The trailer for his new upcoming movie, ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ has already hit social media sites.
