Hollywood veteran Harrison Ford has recently opened up about a difficult time in his early life that he mostly kept private for years.
The 83-year-old actor, who has entertained millions around the world for more than five decades through his iconic roles as Indiana Jones and Han Solo in ‘Star Wars’ movies, has shared that he struggled with severe depression during his college days.
Harrison Ford’s College Depression

During a candid conversation on The Hollywood Reporter‘s Awards Chatter podcast, Ford talked about his time at Ripon College in the early 1960s, saying he often shut himself off from others. “I had a single room and I had classes to go to, but I rarely ventured out. I would get up out of my single bed, go to a phone, order a pizza, go back and lay down in bed until the pizza came. I would eat the pizza, throw the wrappers in the corner, go back to sleep,” he shared.

Ford also remembered how hard it was to even step into class. On some days, he would reach the building, touch the door, and then turn back without going in. He added, “And on the rare occasion I did go to the classroom, I would often touch the door on the outside of the building, and turn around and walk back. I was more than depressed. I think I was ill. I was socially ill, psychologically not well. ”
How Acting Helped Harrison Ford Overcome Depression

For Ford, things began to shift when he signed up for a drama class almost by chance. He later said the experience opened up a completely new way of living for him. “I never found a community at college until I accidentally — in an attempt to get my grade-point-average up — took a class called ‘drama’ without reading the full description of the class,” he recalled.

It gave him a space to express himself and, more importantly, a place where he finally felt he belonged. “It really changed my world, changed my life,” Ford reflected.
Slowly acting became more than just a hobby. It gave him structure, confidence, and people around him who shared the same interests. “I was surprised that the people that I had considered to be fellow geeks and misfits were, in fact, some of the most interesting people I knew,” Ford said. “They were doing something that I hadn’t really understood, and they were telling stories about life, and some of them were exceptional in their capacity to understand human behavior. And so I think I simply found my place amongst storytellers.”
And that helped him move away from the isolation he had been living in during his time at Ripon College.
Harrison Ford Mental Health Revelation and ‘Shrinking’ Role

Today, Ford is widely praised for his work in ‘Shrinking‘, where he stars alongside Jason Segel as a therapist dealing with grief and emotional struggles. The role has been especially noticed by fans and mental health supporters because it feels close to the kind of honesty Ford is now speaking about in real life.
At a stage in life when many actors avoid sharing personal pain, Ford’s openness stands out. It also shows how mental health struggles can affect anyone, even someone who later becomes one of Hollywood’s most recognised names.
