Smith’s death was announced by her two sons Tony and Chris. According to the statement, Maggie peacefully passed away in the hospital on Friday 27th September 2024 at the age of 89. Her sons described her as an intensely private person.

She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother,” the statement read. They also thanked the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and kindness during her final days.

We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time,” it further added. Her loss wasn’t just felt by her family but also by her fans. Moreover, the actress had some of the most memorable performances which the fans will use to remember her. 

Smith’s performances were characterized by her impeccable timing, sharp wit, and ability to convey complex emotions. One of Smith’s most memorable roles was that of Professor Minerva McGonagall in the ‘Harry Potter’ film series.

Moreover, her contributions to the world of entertainment were recognized with numerous awards. She won two Academy Awards, four BAFTA awards, and one Golden Globe Award throughout her career. Her talent and dedication to her craft earned her the respect and admiration of her peers and fans alike.

Hugh Bonneville, her ‘Downton Abbey’ co-star, also expressed admiration for Dame Maggie Smith. He noted her “sharp eye, sharp wit, and formidable talent” that made her a legend of her generation. “She was a true legend of her generation and thankfully will live on in so many magnificent screen performances. My condolences to her boys and wider family,” he stated.

Additionally, he emphasized the enduring impact of her performances and extended his condolences to her family, praising her as a true icon whose legacy will live on through her extensive body of work. Among her many standout roles, Dame Maggie shone in the 1985 Merchant Ivory film ‘A Room With a View’, where she portrayed Charlotte Bartlett.  

The performance earned her an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination. Her death is a significant loss for the entertainment industry. However, her legacy will live on through her iconic performances and the inspiration she provided to countless aspiring actors. She will be deeply missed by fans around the world.
