Gary Oldman first gained fame from his role as Sirius Black in the ‘Harry Potter‘ movie series. Debuting in ‘Harry Potter And The Prisoners Of Azkaban’, the Academy Award-winning actor became Potterheads’ favorite portraying Harry’s godfather. However, he cannot help feeling that his character did not receive enough screen time in the Warner Bros. franchise.
Like any other book adaptation, the screenwriters handpicked desirable plots to fit the film’s running time. Sirius Black played a more important role in the books and his minimal representation in the films left holes in the franchise’s plot. The ‘Slow Horses’ actor agreed with the widely recognized error. Here’s what he said.
Gary Oldman Says Sirius Black Wasn’t Portrayed In The Movies Enough
Attending the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, Gary Oldman answered some questions about his popular ‘Harry Potter’ character. Talking to IndieWire, the actor related that Sirius Black was not given enough screen time. “I love, Sirius. He wasn’t in it enough. He turned up and then he went through the veil,” referring to Sirius’ death in the Death Room in the Department Of Mysteries.

As Harry’s godfather, Sirius played a more significant role in his life than shown in the films. Harry for the majority of ‘Prisoners of Azkaban’ is afraid of the Marauder. After barely showing any development, Harry is suddenly very close to Sirius, who has fled England.
Harry approached Sirius constantly in the books for mentoring as he clearly craved in the third film. Oldman had a brief cameo in ‘Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire’. Thereafter, he is killed in the next installment.
Will Gary Oldman Appear In The Upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ TV Series?
Upon inquiring about his return to the upcoming Harry Potter television series, Oldman replied, “No one’s approached me.” He believes that the showrunner would prefer a completely new cast. He said, “I would bet my money that they will get a whole new cast of people.” However, this does not discourage the ‘The Darkest Hour’ actor. “Maybe in a few years, I could do Dumbledore.”

Oldman revealed that he still has a soft spot for his ‘Harry Potter‘ character. Gary has credited the ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘The Dark Knight’ franchises in the past: “Thank God for ‘Harry Potter.’ I tell you, the two—‘ Batman’ and ‘Harry Potter’—really, they saved me,” he said.
Talking on a podcast previously, Oldman said, “Maybe if I had read the books like Alan [Rickman], if I had got ahead of the curve, if I had known what’s coming, I honestly think I would have played it differently.”
