Why Was Carey Concerned While Shooting HOD?

Alicent Hightower with King Viserys Targaryen

In the episode ‘King of the Narrow Sea’, Alicent Hightower involves in an intimate scene with King Viserys Targaryen. Emily in the interview said that her initial concern was shooting a sex scene opposite Paddy Considine who acted as King Viserys Targaryen.

The Queen of the Seven Kingdoms and her ailing husband are seen getting intimate under the bedsheets, despite Alicent’s indifferent expression throughout the fourth episode of HOD. Emily was still 17 at that time, when she shot that episode. When she read the script, the first scene was her sex scene and intimate scenes. The actress said, “Anything that felt intimate was considered an intimacy scene, which I thought was great.”

“But, it scared me, because at that point I still hadn’t met Paddy, I didn’t know how much of a joy he was and how easy he was going to make [the scene], and all I saw was, you know, a 47-year-old man and me, I was a bit concerned,” the actress explained.

Emily told Newsweek that they had an intimate co-ordinator in the set “who was amazing”. The intimate co-ordinator made sure that Carey was not made to feel shunned or awkward for her acting out the intimate scenes.

“When we got to the rehearsal room, regardless of who was in which scenes, there was an open dialogue about, ‘Look, this is how we’re approaching the show. This is how it’s going to be different from the original. This is what we want to talk about. This is what we want to put out. This is how we want the viewers to view the women in our show,'” Carey specified.

Carey also added that open conversation was needed and was important to make the show an entertainer. She said, “I think that open conversation is so important, it made us all feel incredibly secure and safe in the hands of Ryan and Miguel.”
