Had it not been for Blake Lively‘s perceptive input, the conclusion to this year’s blockbuster ‘Deadpool & Wolverine‘ might have followed a far more predictable trajectory. With Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, the movie hangs the audience in suspense at its climax when both heroes seemingly disappear after destroying the time ripper.
For a brief moment, it’s unclear whether ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ survive, as Matthew MacFadyen’s villainous Paradox delivers one last sinister speech. In the director’s commentary, Shawn Levy credited Lively, who has a cameo as Lady Deadpool, for suggesting the change. Here’s what he said.
Shawn Levy Reveals Blake Lively’s Major Role In ‘Deadpool And Wolverine’ Final Scene
Ryan Reynolds may have been the star of ‘Deadpool and Wolverine‘ for more than one reason, but it was Blake Lively who got special thanks from the director for her suggestion. “Credit where credit is due. It used to be that there was no suspense, that the power room blew up, and our heroes had survived,” Shawn Levy said, as reported by ‘Games Radar.
“It was Blake Lively who said to us, ‘You know, I’ve been with you this whole movie. I want to sit in the fear that they’re lost. Let me be in that place of suspense so the triumph of their survival is more emotional and visceral,'” he said.
Levy explained that Lively’s perspective led to a reshoot, giving the finale a more emotional punch. “It really opened up a new way of thinking about this part of the movie and it’s why we did this reshoot… and, here, the payoff is so much more satisfying,” he added.
Blake Lively Has Been On A Spree With Her Creative Clout This Year
The reshoots were minimal, a mere day and a half according to commentary by Ryan Reynolds, who was also one of the producers of the film. “These kinds of movies typically involve weeks of reshoots,” Ryan Reynolds noted, while also praising MacFadyen’s performance, particularly in the reshot villain monologue: “And he is miraculous.”
Blake Lively has shown her creative clout several times this year, as ‘Deadpool & Wolverine‘ hit theaters within a month of her film ‘It Ends With Us‘, the film adaptation of the bestseller by Colleen Hoover.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, behind-the-scenes of ‘It Ends With Us‘, Lively commissioned a separate cut of the film edited by Shane Reid, with whom she collaborated on ‘Deadpool & Wolverine‘ and on her directed Taylor Swift music video, ‘I Bet You Think About Me’. The final version screened in theaters was apparently Lively’s cut.
Lively has also been open about her creative collaboration with Reynolds. While attending ‘It Ends With Us‘ promotional activities, she said that, for instance, she and Reynolds collaborated to pen an important rooftop scene in the film. “We help each other,” wrote Lively on Instagram. “He works on everything I do. I work on everything he does. So his wins, his celebrations are mine and mine are his,” she wrote.
