When Christmas arrives, the trees get adorned with decorations, gifts lying on the floors, illuminated streets, and houses. While you chug on your egg, not mimosa, the families essentially blast Wham’s ‘Last Christmas’, and Paul McCartney’s ‘Wonderful Christmastime’. But, the one that had become an essential play in every household for almost three decades is Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’.

Surely, the song has broken records and earned Carrey a lot of accolades. It is the most downloaded holiday single of all time. Walter Afanasieff, the long-time collaborator of Mariah, sketched the origin story of the song. He recounted what was the inspiration for the song. Walter said, “We started to write what Mariah wanted to do and what Tommy Mottola wanted to do which was a Phil Spector, old rock ‘n’ roll, sixties-sounding Christmas song.” It is the 1963 Christmas songs from ‘A Christmas Gift For You from Phil Spector’.

Carey said in an interview that she is a very festive person and loves holidays. The reason she wrote the song was “just out of love for Christmas and like really loving Christmas music.” However, it was the extensive knowledge and observant nature of Mariah that made the song technically superior.

“I listen to a lot of old R&B and I listen to a lot of gospel music for inspiration. I also listen to the radio, and I know every song on the radio because I’m a fanatic about that.” Mariah sang the first line “I don’t want a lot for Christmas” when Walter played rock ‘n’ roll. That is how the song came about. Today, the artist earns $3 million per year for the song. So, from the time it was released till 2021, she earned $72 million from the song.

The fans have already deemed Mariah Carey the ‘Queen of Christmas’, but the singer wanted to make things official. In March 2021, Mariah filed for the trademark ‘Queen Of Christmas’ in the U.S. Trademark Office. With the trademark, items like clothes, jewelry, mugs, perfumes, lotions, music, etc., will be covered.

However, the move did not sit well with other artists. Darlene Love, a vocalist, and actress expressed her objection in a Facebook post. She wrote, David Letterman officially declared me the Queen of Christmas 29 years ago, a year before she released ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ and at 81 years of age, I’m NOT changing anything. I’ve been in the business for 52 years, have earned it, and can still hit those notes! If Mariah has a problem, call David or my lawyer!!”
