The presidential elections have brought many celebrities into the limelight for their opinions about the presidential candidates. In yet another addition to the list of celebrities is veteran actress Shirley MacLaine, who spilled out some interesting presidential anecdotes in her new memoir, ‘The Wall of Life’.
Within its pages, MacLaine revealed her encounters with 13 of the last 14 U.S. presidents, though there’s one meeting she fervently wishes she could erase. One such meeting is with the current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Here’s why she would rather forget her meeting with Trump.
Shirley MacLaine Recalls An Unsettling Meeting With Donald Trump
In her memoir ‘The Wall of Life’, Shirley MacLaine shares a memorable encounter at 666 Fifth Avenue, which was once owned by Donald Trump in the 1980s. MacLaine recalls in the book, “There was a vacant apartment in that building. I went up to look at it, and walked in because I knew it was available, and he was there.”
She further describes the unnerving experience of meeting Trump alone and the palpable discomfort she felt. “In his head, I could see he was undressing himself and me, and I got out of there very fast,” she said. Needless to say, the apartment remained unclaimed and beyond her budget.
While MacLaine has endured her share of cringe-worthy presidential encounters—as in performing at John F. Kennedy’s birthday in 1962, when Marilyn Monroe famously sang “Happy Birthday“—the Trump incident was decidedly unsettling for her.
Among all the presidents she has met, the one absentee in her impressive roster was Richard Nixon. “I never encountered Nixon,” she writes, elaborating on her lack of interest in meeting him. Other interesting revelations in the book include when MacLaine asked Morgan Freeman to marry her, only to be turned down.
She also talks about her career choices, revealing that she turned down the role of Holly Golightly in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’. “I turned it down because I didn’t want to have to worry about my weight to be able to wear all those outfits and do all those fittings… I legendarily hated fittings. I also didn’t think it was a very good script,” she writes.
Donald Trump Is Surrounded By Controversies Ahead Of Presidential Elections
Meanwhile, Donald Trump is embroiled in his own cinematic scandal, as he continues to pull off stunts to stay relevant ahead of the presidential elections. From slamming Kamala Harris to making lewd remarks about anyone who supports her, the Republican candidate is leaving no stone unturned.
MacLaine’s memoir comes out just as Trump’s life has been given a cinematic rendition in Ali Abbasi’s film ‘The Apprentice’, which premiered at Cannes. The film, with Sebastian Stan playing a young Trump negotiating New York’s real estate maze under the tutelage of Roy Cohn, played by Jeremy Strong, has already attracted Trump’s ire. He’s called it a “cheap, defamatory, and politically disgusting hatchet job” on his Truth Social platform, hoping it “bombs.”

In response, director Abbasi charmed to diplomatically agree to discuss the film further, while also acknowledging a packed media schedule. “I might be able to give you a call tomorrow,” he said.
